SPORTS UPDATE

2010-2011 Season

Sports Committee

The Sports Committee would like to welcome you to another fun and exciting school year and hope that you will come out to support our Volleyball and Basketball teams.  The committee currently consists of the following members:

Esteban Rodriguez

Mike Koletsos

Larry Gradisher

Mark LaRue

Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the Sports Committee should contact Esteban Rodriguez at 630-736-1583 or visit the sports table at Family Payment Day on August 11th.   We are looking for a Concession Coordinator and Scorekeepers for volleyball and basketball games.  Anyone who joins and actively participates in the Sports Committee will receive Category A credit.  The Concessions and Scorekeepers will receive anywhere from Category C credit per game night (up to 3 games each night) up to Category A credit for the entire sports season.  Parents of players must serve one night as scorekeeper or concession sales as part of their commitment to the sports program.  Participant families that exceed the minimum will earn C credit for each additional game night.

Volleyball

Great news!  We have submitted volleyball teams for a 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade girls’ volleyball teams.  A $75 registration fee is due on Book Day, August 12th.  Please bring cash or check.  Practice dates and times are still being finalized.  A sheet with dates and times will be available on the website and at the Family Payment Day.    Games begin September 10th and last through end of October.  The first week of November will the playoff for 7th and 8th grade teams.  The finals will be held on November 6th.

The league allows us to roster up to 15 players on a team.  We have room on each team.  Any 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade girl who has not registered and wants to play volleyball can still sign up.  Space is limited!!   Please see the Sports Committee Representative at Family Payment Day to fill out a volleyball registration form.  Don’t forget to bring along the registration fee!  NOTE: We do need two more 5th and 8th grade girls to sign up to meet the minimum roster requirements in order to fill those teams.

Volleyball Uniforms

We will use the same volleyball uniform as last year.  You do not have to purchase a new uniform unless you feel your old one must be replaced.  Replacements will cost $17 for the jersey, $8 for the shorts or $25 for the entire uniform.

All 5th grade girls playing volleyball or new players for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls’ teams are required to purchase a uniform.  Uniforms will cost $25.  It includes a shirt with your last name, number, and shorts.  You may want to order a size bigger than normal since the uniform will be used throughout their volleyball career at St. John.  A sample uniform will be available at Book Day.  The only change to 5th grade uniforms is the league requires us now to put numbers on the front and back of the jersey.

Contact the Sports Committee Representative at Family Payment Day to make your uniform purchase.  You will need to indicate the shirt size, short size, and name on uniform.  If you are replacing your old uniform, please indicate the number of your jersey.  Please bring cash or check.

Volleyball Volunteer Schedule

Every family of team members is required to volunteer during one home game night (up to 3 games per night).  Once the game schedule has been finalized, Mark LaRue will create a volunteer schedule for families to sign up.  If you have multiple children playing, you only need to volunteer once.  The game schedule will be finalized in August (unfortunately after Family Payment Day).  Volunteer responsibilities include: helping setup before the game, concessions or score keeping, and helping clean up after the game.  A volunteer sheet will be available during the Family Payment Day for families to put down what responsibilities you are interested in doing.

Basketball

This year, our basketball season will begin in early November and will end in March.  We hope to form a team for each grade.  Any 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade boy or girl who wants to play basketball for St. John’s must fill out the enclosed Basketball Registration form and turn in on Family Payment Day.  Please note the registration fee is not due at this time.  We need to know who is interested so we can submit the teams to the league by September 14th

Practices and games will be held at Canton Middle School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Look for more information in your Wednesday Notes folder.  The practice and game schedule will be finalized by the end of October.  We look for the playoffs for 7th and 8th grade teams to start at the end of February.

Calling All Coaches

We are still looking for coaches to help with the 8th grade girls’ volleyball team.  If you are interested in coaching, please indicate on the registration form or contact Esteban Rodriguez at 630-736-1583 as soon as possible.  All current coaches, please stop by the sports table at Family Payment Day to ensure the sports committee has your contact information.

As a reminder, all coaches are required to have VIRTUS training through the diocese.  If you do not have training, please go to http://www.virtusonline.com/virtus/ for more information.  Coaches & Asst. Coaches receive Category A credit!

Coaches Meeting

All volleyball coaches, please mark on your calendar Wednesday August 25th.  The sports committee and the Big West Conference will each hold a Mandatory Coach’s Meeting.  We will meet at 6pm at St. John Kyle Hall to go over what is expected of you as a coach.  Then we will head out together to St. Walter’s school by 7pm to attend the mandatory conference meeting.  This meeting will cover the rules and by-laws of the league.  You will also be required to sign a Coach’s Code of Conduct in order to verify you understand the rules, what is expected of you, and that you have completed VIRTUS training.  Failure to attend the conference meeting will result in not being allowed to coach volleyball this year.  A separate basketball coaches meeting will be held in October.
